Here are a few hints to be successful with the book and the character analysis:
- Start reading early--this is not the type of book you can read quickly so you need ample time to read and process.
- Do not substitute reading the book for reading SparkNotes. It is find to use SparkNotes as a study aid, meaning you read the book and use SparkNotes to clarify your understanding. However, if you rely solely on SparkNotes, you will not do well on the character analysis.
- Take notes as you are reading. Look specifically for examples of direct and indirect characterization. If you are not familiar with direct and indirect characterization, do a little research to see what exactly they mean. Also, your character analysis requires specific examples from the text to support your conclusions--it is helpful to identify these as you read.
